Message from the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health.

Bell Let’s Talk Day, an annual awareness event that aims to raise awareness of mental health in Canada, is taking place today. The topic for this year is “Let’s change this,” which emphasizes how we can all work to combat the stigma associated with mental illness, alter perceptions, and promote real action to bring about change. We are witnessing major advancements in the ways Canadians are having compassionate dialogues about mental health as the pandemic continues to emphasize the significance of mental health as a crucial element of overall health. One in two persons who require assistance for mental health issues is reportedly not receiving it. In addition, more than 200 people try suicide each day in Canada, and on average, 12 people die by suicide. Our communities continue to suffer sad losses as a result of the toxic drug and overdose crises. Between January and June 2022, 3,556 people – or an average of 20 deaths per day – would die from an apparent opioid-related overdose in Canada, bringing the country’s total number of overdose deaths since 2016 to over 32,000. These figures represent cherished kids, parents, friends, neighbours, and coworkers, not just statistics.

Today and every day, let’s keep the conversation going around mental health, continue fighting stigma, and create positive change for all of us. Let’s Change This!

The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, P.C., M.P.
